Simplify Your Life

“The sculptor produces the beautiful statue by chipping away such parts of the marble block as are not needed – it is a process of elimination.”

– Elbert Hubbard

Traveling is a beautiful way to live simply. When you live out of a suitcase, even for a week, there is a process of elimination that we all have to go through. Careful examination of our beloved “stuff” is essential when trying to travel light.

Over the past three months I have been living and working in Saint Lucia. It has been a great experience of self discovery and assessment of simplification in my life.

Taking away all of my external belongings, with the exception of my suitcase, has made me understand how little I truly need. We surround ourselves with endless “stuff” and continually acquire more “stuff” and our attachment is so strong. It is surprising how adaptive we really are.

Being away from familiarity is also an unexpected internal purification. Spending quiet moments alone, reading for the joy of reading, eating with intention, meeting people from around the globe, making new friends, experiencing new surroundings; these have all opened my eyes to the present moment, and simplified my perspective on life.

I now look forward to reassessing all my belongings, knowing that less is more. It is freeing to let go externally and witness the internal transformation this brings.

Try it – observe what you need to let go of in your life. Simplify. Start by purging physical things that you have been hanging on to, that don’t serve you, that you don’t truly need. It will clear some of the clutter in your mind I promise.
